It’s cold out there. And I’m not just talking about the weather. Today’s icy political climate has caused us to crack, and it seems we’re all drifting farther and farther apart on our own sad, lonely little glaciers. And even though you may find it hard to believe that anyone who voted for “the other candidate” is actually human, they are. No matter who we voted for, we all have hopes for our future, dreams for our children and love for our country. So here are a few ways to bring a little warmth back to the world.
- Smile. At everyone. Yes, even that neighbor whom you know voted “incorrectly.”
- Pay it forward. Next time you’re going through the drive-thru, offer to pay for the person behind you. It’ll make their day and maybe they’ll pay it forward too.
- Volunteer or donate. Find a cause that matters to you, whether it’s women’s rights, the Syrian Refugee crisis or cancer. See what kind of help they need most and commit to making a difference.
- Hold the door. Small gestures of kindness like this are what connect us all and remind each other that there’s still plenty of human decency in the world.
- Compliment someone. Tell a neighbor or coworker you like their new haircut or their ugly sweater. It’ll make them smile.
- Don’t text — call. Yes, like on the phone. Your grandma, your great aunt, your long-lost college roommate. Dial them up and ask them how they’re doing.
- Wave to your neighbor. Simple, right?
- Leave an extra-large tip. Your server or barista is working hard for the holidays. Your extra-large tip will make their day.
- Bring in the neighbor’s garbage can. If you beat your neighbor home, do them this solid. They might just return the favor next time.
- Do the thing they hate. Whether it’s unloading the dishwasher, taking out the trash or killing the bug, do the chore you know your significant other despises. They’ll love you for it.
Most importantly, respect everybody, no matter what their beliefs may be — even if they don’t respect yours. Because believe it or not, those are the very people who need kindness the most.
